Halloween

Is a annual holiday celebrated on October 31. It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints, but is today largely a secular celebration.
Halloween activities include trick-treating, wearing costumes and attending costume parties, carving jack-ó-lanterns, ghost tours, bonfires, visiting haunted attrations, pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.

Historian Nicholas Rogers, exploring the origins of Halloween, notes that while "some folklorists have detected its origins in the Roman feast of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds, or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, [it is] more typically linked to the Celticfestival of Samhain or Samuin (pronounced sow-an or sow-in)".The name is derived from Old Irish and means roughly "summer's end".A similar festival was held by the ancient Britonsand is known as Calan Gaeaf (pronounced kalan-geyf).

The ancient Celts believed that the border between this world and the Otherworld became thin on Samhain, allowing spirits (both harmless and harmful) to pass through. The family's ancestors were honoured and invited home whilst harmful spirits were warded off. It is believed that the need to ward off harmful spirits led to the wearing of costumes and masks. Their purpose was to disguise oneself as a harmful spirit and thus avoid harm. In Scotland the spirits were impersonated by young men dressed in white with masked, veiled or blackened faces. Samhain was also a time to take stock of food supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. Bonfires played a large part in the festivities. All other fires were doused and each home lit their hearth from the bonfire. The bones of slaughtered livestock were cast into its flames. Sometimes two bonfires would be built side-by-side, and people and their livestock would walk between them as a cleansing ritual. The festival of Samhain celebrates the end of the "lighter half" of the year and beginning of the "darker half", and is sometimes regarded as the "Celtic New Year".

Another common practise was divination, which often involved the use of food and drink.

The name 'Halloween' and many of its present-day traditions derive from the Old English er

Global warming

Is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation. Global surface temperature increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) during the last century. TheIntergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC) concludes that most of the observed temperature increase since the middle of the 20th century is caused by increasing concentrations ofgreenhouse gases resulting from human activity such as fossil fuelburning and deforestation. The IPCC also concludes that variations in natural phenomena such as solar radiation and volcanoesproduced most of the warming from pre-industrial times to 1950 and had a small cooling effect afterward. These basic conclusions have beenendorsed by more than 40 scientific societies and academies of science, including all of the national academies of science of the major industrialized countries. A small number of scientists dispute the consensus view.

Climate model projections summarized in the latest IPCC report indicate that the globalsurface temperature will probably rise a further1.1 to 6.4 °C(2.0 to 11.5 °F) during the twenty-first century. The uncertainty in this estimate arises from the use of models with differingsensitivity to greenhouse gas concentrationsand the use of differingestimates of future greenhouse gas emissions. Some otheruncertaintiesinclude how warming and related changes will vary from region to region around the globe. Most studies focus on the period up to the year 2100. However, warming is expected to continue beyond 2100 even if emissions stop, because of the large heat capacity of the oceans and the long lifetime ofcarbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

An increase in global temperature will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern ofprecipitation, probably including expansion of subtropicaldeserts. The continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice is expected, with warming being strongest in the Arctic. Other likely effects include increases in the intensity ofextreme weather events, species extinctions, and changes in agricultural yields.

Political and public debatecontinues regarding climate change, and what actions (if any) to take in response. The available options aremitigationto reduce further emissions;adaptation to reduce the damage caused by warming; and, more speculatively, geoengineering to reverse global warming. Most national governments have signed and ratified the Kyoto Protocolaimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Welcome to my blog

Hi, there! My name’s Angy Boscán but you can call me beba. I’m from Maracaibo, originally. I live in Santa Cruz de Mara. I’m 17 years old and I study accouting school at URBE. My favorite subjects are accouting and english. I love music, studying accouting, talking on the phone with my friends, pizza, chocolate, ice cream, cookies, my family and my dog! I hate listening to rock, washing the dishes, the mistreatment of animals and children! My dream is to graduate! I’d love to work in an important company and buy a house, get married and start a family. English is widely spoken so I want to learn a little more of that wonderful language to enrich my knowledge!
